"ZombiU" Game Preview for Nintendo Wii U

Bite me.
Blog exclusive!

Console gamers have surely heard about Nintendo's upcoming next-generation Wii U console. But for the ill-informed this console is the successor to the best selling Wii video game system. One of the nicer aspects about the Wii U is that it finally promises to bring high definition visuals and smoother action to Nintendo games, which in my opinion is the Wii's biggest shortfall. Launch date is set for Sunday, November 18th, 2012 and if I save up enough coin I hope to be purchasing Wii U alongside ZombiU, one of the numerous titles available the same day.

Now say what you want about the cutesy, tongue-in-cheek title but ZombiU looks to be really frightening. The game's back-story centers around an age old Welsh doomsday prophecy that has unfortunately come true. Players take on the role of a survivor in a post-apocalyptic London full of flesh-eating zombies. ZombiU is a 'survival horror' game which means that the pace of the game is slow and the player(s) have to conserve health, ammo etc. as supplies are scarce.

So now you know what the game is about, but do gamers really need another zombie game? After all Resident Evil 6 was just released and the series is still very popular. But ever since Resident Evil became more tailored to the MTV generation in its fourth installment less action oriented 'survival horror' games fell by the wayside. Gamers (myself included) would be smart to pickup ZombiU if your into old school frights and if the developers deliver on all of their pre-release promises.

Despite ZombiU not being action oriented it isn't a tedious game. As the videos down below show you the slow pace is deceptive. For example: my blood started pumping just by watching the game play video. Why? Because at anytime your character can be attacked. Adding to the tension & excitement is the fact that just one zombie bite is lethal. Once you die you lose your built up skills and gear. Luckily your gear can be retrieved, however your skills will need to be built back up when you reenter the game as another survivor. The lack of checkpoints adds to the games immense difficultly.

Think the game sounds hard enough? Well, I have more 'bad' news. Their is only one difficultly level for ZombiU -- hard. You do have (as I understand it) unlimited lives, but you have to retrace your steps each and every time. Overall, this seems to be a highly gratifying scare experience. I haven't research the other launch day titles as much, but this could be the Wii U's first best game.

Be sure to check out the embedded videos below just in case you haven't seen the game play demo or trailer for ZombiU.
