Brief Film Comparison... Dragon Tattoo Pt. 1 and 2

Playing with fire...
Blog Exclusive!

During the past week I saw the first two movies in the "Millennium Trilogy." That being said I highly approved of the first film "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," however "The Girl Who Played With Fire," wasn't so hot.

"Fire" was actually a made for TV movie. It was cut down in length for its theatrical release. I find this very disheartening and completely odd since "Tattoo" featured an arresting performance by Naoomi Rapace (who is currently being tabbed as the next Marion Cotillard.) Yes that Oscar winning actress who has since appeared in the major Hollywood smash Inception. Also "Tattoo" was a fine adaptation with terrific pacing and attention to detail thanks to director Niels Arden Oplev. It's sequel, was directed by another man Daniel Alfredsson, messes up Stieg Larsson's wonderfully dynamic source material.

"Fire" started off fine for me, until about halfway through the movie I remembered - holy shit the first 100 pages or thereabouts were completely cut out of the film! What an awful decision. Either the person who decided to throw out the material was a complete idiot or they were forced to do so because of budget constraints. Yes nothing happens in these opening chapters (in the book) that changes the main conflict of the story, but Lisbeth Salander really grows as an individual.
